Weekly Washington: Coming to You Live From the Mall!

uploaded to flickr by NCinDCOk, I'm a day late, but if you think I'm wasting some wonderful fall weather toiling away here, you're nuts.

Inevitably, the nice weather today evokes comparisons to a similar day nine years ago. Remembrance services were quietly held at the Pentagon this morning at their 9/11 Memorial. And in a fitting ceremony, the National Cathedral used prayers from the Quran in today's noontime prayer service. Among the four in their Rare Book Collection is the first English edition of the Quran, published in 1649. (TBD, WNC)

Yup, the oldest house in Washington, DC dates from 1754. Pretty impressive when you consider the city was founded half a century later. So it must be in Georgetown, which predates DC, right? Nope, The Lindens in Kalorama was trucked down here from Danvers, Massachusetts in 1934. (The Location)

Heads up to all you photographers! We Love DC covers the TSA's latest attempt to safeguard the homeland by creating a poster of a ridiculously suspicious man snapping a picture of an airplane. This is a periodic theme with the overabundance of security in DC, just know that photography is legal and allowed everywhere in DC, even if you get questions by a security guard.

So DC is the 7th most pedestrain unfriendly large city in the US? Mostly, it just shows how useless such "rankings" are. This is the fifth worst one I've read this year. (TBD On Foot)

Free WiFi on the National Mall!! DC's Office of the Chief Technological Officer (isn't that redundant? Office of the Officer?) added the National Mall to areas serviced in DC by free WiFi. Others available here. Apparently, I'm the only one excited about it, but then I probably have more down time on the Mall than any single other person in the Universe. Anyone want to contest that? (Around the Mall)

Glad to see it's not just DC that's a bit skimpy on bathroom options. Interesting article by NorthEndWaterfront.com about the paucity of public restrooms in the North End of Boston. I feel their pain.

I can attest to the "paucity of public restrooms" in both locations! My husband and I just got back from a long weekend in Boston.

And the paucity of working drinking fountains problem continues to rear its ugly head on The National Mall. I was all over The Mall today on a tour with some foreigners. The drinking fountains mostly did not work at all. The one that was "working" had almost no pressure. Duh. No one wants to have to put lips to metal to get water.
